Christmas Cheer!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas at Katzie! We have a selection of Christmas stories we are reading over the next couple of weeks.  It's so nice to get cozy and read on snowy days like today.
Cold and snowy days are perfect for reading!

Here are some of the Christmas books in our library.  Do you have a favourite Christmas or holiday book? Tell us in the comments below.

Did you know that our local Grouse Mountain receives an average annual snowfall of 868.7 cm? That puts it in the top ten places with the most snow in Canada!  It snows an average of 78 days a year on Grouse Mountain.  Want to see if it's snowing right now? Graphic Novels

We have a good selection of graphic novels in our library and I have found these to be a favourite with many students. Graphic novels are books that tell a story in a comic book format. Often the book is one story. Sometimes it is a collection of stories or even a story told in one page. We have some graphic novels that were novels first and then illustrated and adapted for the graphic novel format, such as "City of Ember" or "A Wrinkle in Time". Graphic novels deal with many themes and are not all funny just because they are written like a comic.  If you enjoy graphic novels, tell us why in the comments below.

Katzie Library has many different graphic novels to choose from.  What is your favourite?

Too Tall Houses

This week we are reading the Surrey Picture Book of the Year  nominee, "Too Tall Houses," by Gianna Marino.  I challenged the students to create a "too tall" house with Lego. Then I challenged them further to combine the three houses at their table into one structure! Here are a few views of the Lego city created by Mrs. Nelson's Grade 3 class.

Lego!

Grade 3 students worked together building structures with Lego after reading the book, "Building Our House" by Jonathan Bean. I saw students cooperating, creating, problem solving, concentrating, planning, and building. What do you like about Lego?

Katzie Annex Library

The library at the annex is starting to take shape!  Students have enjoyed their first book sign out last week and are learning how to take care of their books.  This week we are learning to be responsible for our books by bringing them back and forth to the library in a plastic bag.  This is especially important with all the rain we've had lately!

This is the nonfiction side of the library.

Yay! Books!

Our books have arrived!  The books are slowly making their way from the boxes onto the shelves, with a lot of them travelling to find their home on the annex library shelves.  What a treat to have brand new books to read!  Remember to take good care of your book so the next student can enjoy it.
Let's get reading!
