About Me

My name is Mrs. Powell and I am one of the teacher-librarians at Katzie Elementary.  I love reading and sharing books with children and being able to help students find the "just right" book.  I also love technology and am always looking for ways to use it to help students learn.  When I'm not at work, I love to spend time with my family, including my six grandchildren, as well as singing, gardening and riding my bike.  I also love learning about new things (or old things!) Here are a few photos of places I have visited and what I learned about each place:

This is Provand's Lordship, built in 1471.  It is the oldest house in Glasgow, Scotland!  It was originally built to be a hospital and had an herb garden outside where they grew herbs used as medicines.  It was so cool to walk around inside a house that was built over 500 years ago!

What do you think this is?  Well, it's a boxcar from a train that derailed in 1957 or 1958 just south of Whistler, B.C.    You can hike to the boxcars (there are 7 in all) and be amazed that they are sitting in the middle of the forest!

Here I am at the Lenore Lake Caves in Washington State.  The caves were formed over 12,000 years ago when the area was flooded by melting ice.  First Nations peoples used these caves thousands of years ago.  What do you think they used them for?

Here I am at Fort Stevens, Oregon.  Can you guess what that rusty old thing is behind me?
Well, it's a ship that ran ashore (that means it came too close to the shore and got stuck!) in 1906.   The name of the ship is the Peter Iredale.  Luckily, no one was hurt!  If you look in the background of the picture, you will see it is very misty and foggy.  Can you guess why this ship ran ashore?

Come and visit me in our Library Learning Commons.  I would love to help you find that "just right" book!
